It is natural that memory declines with age. We can often hear old people sigh, “I’m too old to remember things.”. However, now more and more young people also feel that their brains are not enough and they are forgetful in doing things. In fact, memory decline is caused by some bad habits that are unknowingly formed in life and are harmful to the brain.
1. Excessive pressure
Moderate stress can promote memory, but excessive stress will hurt memory. Studies have shown that stress makes the adrenal glands secrete cortisol, and excessive cortisol can kill the hippocampus in the brain, which plays a key role in learning and memory. Young people often put a lot of energy into their work. Excessive workload will lead to excessive psychological pressure. People are also prone to anxiety, depression and other negative emotions, which will increase pressure and affect memory. In the long run, it will inevitably fall into a vicious circle.
2. Lack of sleep
Because of their heavy workload, young people often work overtime and stay up late, which directly leads to lack of sleep. A large number of studies have confirmed that people who lack sleep will reduce their cognitive ability, language ability, creativity and plan making ability, which may be related to the reduced activity of the prefrontal cortex after lack of sleep.
Due to lack of sleep on weekdays, most young people like to sleep in on weekends or holidays, hoping to make up for their sleep in this way. However, sleeping in will make the cerebral cortex suppress for a long time, which will lead to the decline of understanding and memory, the decline of immune function, the disruption of the body’s biological rhythm, laziness and inertia.
Therefore, even on a rest day, you should not sleep in late. You should get up according to your daily biological clock. At ordinary times, we should also reasonably arrange our work and gradually change the habit of insufficient sleep.
3. Stay at home too much
Nowadays, there are more and more “curtilage men” and “curtilage women”. When it comes to rest days, they like to stay at home and spend their time sleeping and watching TV dramas, which do not require much brainpower. However, thinking is the best way to exercise the brain. Being unwilling to use the brain will only accelerate the deterioration of the brain and reduce memory.
Most house lovers don’t like to move, and they seldom exercise on weekdays. This is also a reason for reducing memory. Because the benefits of exercise to the brain are very obvious, it enables more fresh blood to carry a large amount of oxygen through the brain, providing rich nourishment to the brain. At the same time, exercise can stimulate brain-derived neurotrophic factor and promote the growth of brain neurons.
4. Long term smoking and drinking
After work, there are always many social engagements that can not be evaded. In all kinds of social occasions, there are always cigarettes and alcohol. Moreover, young people also like to smoke and drink alcohol as a means of reducing stress. Long term smoking and drinking may result in insufficient blood supply to the brain, brain cells in places with poor blood flow may gradually shrink, and in serious cases, memory may gradually decline and lead to dementia.
