The research team combed the data of an ongoing US government health survey, and all 1700 elderly Americans received a hearing test. Among them, 589 participants had mild hearing loss, 550 had moderate to severe hearing loss, and the remaining 527 had normal hearing. The research results show that although the elderly with hearing impairment do have some other health problems, including bad habits such as smoking and drinking, and a higher incidence rate of heart disease, stroke and other diseases. However, even after the researchers considered the above factors, people with hearing impairment still have a higher risk of death in the next six years than those with normal hearing.
Researchers believe that hearing impairment is not only a part of normal aging. It will make the elderly avoid going out, reduce social activities, and detach themselves from real life. To a certain extent, it will cause their poor physical health, memory and thinking skills, and then lead to an increased risk of death.
