According to the report of the British “diabetes website” on July 25, a new study in China has found that night shift workers have a 37% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Researchers from Huazhong University of science and technology sorted out and analyzed the results of 12 observational studies. These studies involved 226652 subjects, including 14595 diabetes patients. The study found that the risk of diabetes increased by 9% among those who worked night shift compared with those who did not. Men have a greater risk of diabetes than women. Men who worked night shifts had a 37% increased risk of diabetes. The alternation of day shift and night shift increased the risk of diabetes by 42%.
The researchers said that the study did not explore the specific mechanism of night shift increasing the risk of diabetes. However, one explanation is that changes in sleep patterns can affect changes in the levels of important hormones in the body, thus increasing the risk of diabetes. Another explanation is that the change in the daily meal time of night shift people will also lead to an increase in the intake of fast food, which is often high in calories and low in nutrition.
