A comprehensive number of studies by foreign media pointed out that six things should be done on an empty stomach. In most cases, starvation is not a good thing. But sometimes, hunger increases efficiency. The US medical journal recently summarized six things that are easier to do on an empty stomach.
1. Exercise. Researchers from Northumbria University found that people who exercise on an empty stomach eat less and burn more fat after exercise than those who eat breakfast and exercise again. In addition, exercise on an empty stomach before meals can also improve athletic performance.
2. Study. Researchers from Yale University School of Medicine found in 2006 that hunger can help students learn better. More precisely, it is not hunger, but hormones generated by fasting stimulate the advanced functions of spatial learning and memory formation in the brain.
3. Sex life. The operation of digestive function requires a lot of energy and blood, and energy and blood play an equally important role in the process of sexual life: after a man eats a big meal, the blood needed to support erectile function will flow to the stomach. Although it is not impossible to have sex after eating enough, from the perspective of physiological science, if more blood flows to the penis, erection will be stronger and lasting. Overeating can also disrupt women’s sexual impulses, making them feel bloated, difficult to move their bodies and less sexy.
4. Make a decision. Scientists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands have found that people make better decisions when they are fasting. Scientists explained that although starvation affects mood, it will make people rely more on intuition to make reasonable decisions when facing complex and uncertain situations.
5. Take some drugs. Some drugs (such as drugs for tuberculosis and drugs for erectile dysfunction) are best taken on an empty stomach, because food will prevent the drugs from being fully absorbed by the human body. Some foods (such as grapefruit) can also raise the concentration of drugs in the blood to dangerous levels.
6. Sleep. According to the official fitness blog website in Los Angeles, just make sure you don’t feel hungry before going to bed. This is because sleep only requires very little energy. Sleeping after eating too much may cause the human body to store extra calories as fat rather than as fuel. In addition, too much food in the stomach will lead to digestive problems and affect sleep.
