Normal adults urinate 4-6 times during the day and 0-2 times at night. The obvious increase in the number of times is called urination frequency. The increase in the number of times of urination at night is the so-called “rising at night”. The kidney qi is sufficient, the fixation function is normal, and the urine stored in the bladder can be excreted in a certain degree. If the kidney qi is weak and there is no right to solid absorption, the symptoms of frequent urination can occur. At night, Yang fades and Yin prevails, and the body is also weak in Yang Qi, so the symptoms of frequent urination at night are more obvious in those with kidney deficiency.
“Rising at night” is considered by western medicine as an early manifestation of impaired renal function. If it is a male, western medicine may say that the prostate is large. If a person is degenerative with age, he can take medicine, but there is no good way.
In principle, the kidneys are rich in blood vessels. When lying flat at night, the kidneys bear more blood than when standing upright during the day. Therefore, when the renal function is damaged, the “purification” function of the kidneys will decrease and urine will increase significantly. The “purification” effect of the kidney mainly depends on the filtering effect of rich capillaries, especially in hypertensive patients. Because of the changes of vascular endothelium caused by long-term hypertension, the purification effect of the kidney is affected, and the increase of urine is more obvious. Therefore, when patients with hypertension have increased nocturia, we must pay attention to the protection of the kidney. The causes of increased nocturia also include inflammatory stimuli, such as cystitis, urethritis, vulvar inflammation, etc., which are generally accompanied by frequent urination, urgency and pain; Furthermore, there are mental and neurological factors. Some people will have more nocturia due to emotional tension and anxiety, commonly known as “neurotic frequency of urination”.
Traditional Chinese medicine treats frequent nocturnal urination from the deficiency of kidney qi, which supplements kidney qi, solidifies astringency and stops urination. There are many such prescriptions, so I won’t introduce them here. Because prescriptions are made by TCM doctors after syndrome differentiation and treatment, and everyone’s situation is different, it is irresponsible to prescribe and recommend drugs casually. And in terms of treatment, combined with other symptom specific drugs, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage and other methods are very effective.
