Recently, a number of radiation protection products have been sold on the market or online shopping platforms in Hong Kong, including radiation protection mobile phone bags, electromagnetic radiation protection cards and radiation protection metal stickers. In the product introduction, it is claimed that metal fibers, gold plating and other materials are used to absorb electromagnetic waves released from mobile phones. As long as they are carried with the body or pasted on the mobile phone, the radiation absorbed by the human body can be reduced.
A Hong Kong media recently purchased four products that claim to be radiation resistant, including metal stickers, protection cards and two mobile phone bags, and entrusted the Department of electronic engineering of City University of Hong Kong to conduct tests.
In the test, the ratio of the actual absorption of RF energy per kilogram of human tissue was measured in the human head and human body models. The results show that when the mobile phone is placed on the human head without any radiation protection products, the specific absorption rate is 0.041 watt per kilogram. After the mobile phone is pasted with a radiation proof metal sticker, the specific absorption rate increases by more than twice, reaching 0.095 watts. What is more surprising is that the specific absorption rate of one of the cable type radiation proof mobile phone bags has risen to 0.352 watt per kilogram, an increase of nearly 8 times.
As for the phenomenon that the specific absorption rate does not fall but rises after using radiation protection products, experts from the Department of electronic engineering at City University explained that the metal substances contained in radiation protection products will disturb the electromagnetic field, making mobile phones need a large number of electromagnetic waves to search for signals, thus releasing more radiation. Although some radiation protection products can slightly reduce the radiation level, they will also weaken the telephone signal at the same time.
At present, all mobile phones sold in Hong Kong must meet the specific absorption rate safety standard set by the communications authority, that is, two watts per kilogram. Although the increase in the specific absorption rate of radiation protection products did not exceed the safety standard, some oncologists pointed out that electromagnetic wave radiation will affect human cells, and once there are malignant changes in genes, there will be a chance to cause cancer.
