Inventory essential health tools at home

A survey conducted by the Beijing Center for disease prevention and control (CDC) shows that although the frequency of health tools such as limited salt spoon, oil control pot, waist circumference ruler, weight meter and sphygmomanometer entering people’s homes has increased, the correct use rate of tools is not high, and it is urgent to give scientific guidance to people.

This year, the Beijing CDC Health Education Institute sampled 38 streets and townships from 16 districts (counties) in Beijing, and conducted a sampling survey on the ownership and use of health measurement tools among 3297 permanent residents aged 20 to 79 and their families. The results show that at present, the households in Beijing have a high ownership rate of limited salt scoops, oil control pots, waist scales, weight meters, sphygmomanometers and blood glucose meters, of which the ownership rate of the top five health measurement tools has exceeded 50%.

Professor Wang Linhong, executive deputy director of the chronic disease prevention and control center of the Chinese Center for disease prevention and control, told the life times that these health tools are necessary for families and good helpers for preventing chronic diseases (including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes, malignant tumors, chronic respiratory diseases, etc.). Many chronic diseases are related to bad lifestyle, such as high oil and salt diet, obesity, sedentary, less exercise, etc. these gadgets are not only easy to use, but also can control bad habits imperceptibly. Generally speaking, limited salt scoops are used to control salt intake. In 2011, the Chinese dietary guidelines recommended that the daily intake of salt (including the amount of salt in soy sauce and other foods) of healthy adults in China should not exceed 6G, and the capacity of each flat spoon of the limited salt spoon is generally 2G, so each person should not exceed 3 flat teaspoons a day, so that they will not eat too much salt. The Chinese Nutrition Society recommends that the standard amount of edible oil per person per day should be 25ml, which can be measured by the scale on the oil control pot. Waist circumference ruler and weight scale are used to remind citizens to control their weight; For people over 35 years old, it is better to monitor blood pressure regularly with a sphygmomanometer.

The CDC Health Education Institute found in the survey that although the ownership rate of these health tools is high, their use rate is not high: of the 2276 Households Participating in the survey, only 25.1% can correctly use the limited salt spoon; 46.6% of the families regarded the oil control pot as an ordinary oil container; 37.7% of the families will use the sphygmomanometer correctly. Wang Linhong said that she also found in her daily work that many families put these tools on the shelf or do not use them correctly, which will greatly reduce their health effects.

Wang Linhong said that when the community distributes these tools, it should give detailed guidance to the public on the correct use methods, and publicize them repeatedly. The public should also try to use them strictly according to the correct methods. At the same time, relevant departments can continue to improve the operability of these tools. She suggested that in addition to the five tools of limited salt spoon, oil control pot, waist circumference ruler, weight meter and sphygmomanometer, BMI calculation cards and pedometers should also be necessary at home. BMI (body mass index) is the ratio of one’s own weight and height, which is the commonly used international standard to measure the degree of obesity and health of a human body. The calculation card can easily help people calculate their own BMI value; The pedometer can calculate the number of steps taken every day very well. Some studies have found that the elderly who use the pedometer prefer walking and other sports and are more able to adhere to long-term exercise.
